Imphal: Four houses were swept away and floodwater entered around 250 houses evacuating hundreds of people due to the heavy rainfall of Cyclone Remal with the Jiri River of Manipur flowing above the danger level on Friday.

This river shares a border with the Jiribam district of Manipur and the Cachar district of Assam.

Hundreds of people affected by the flood are taking shelter in relief camps opened in six different locations across the district, officials said.

Kamarang Muslim village was the worst affected by the flood where four dwelling houses were swept away by the strong current water of the Jiri River on Friday.

A total of 95 houses in this village are flooded owing to the overflowing of the Jiri River.

The flood water entered the villages and flooded the houses at Sotobekra 17 houses, Jiribam Barrak Circle Butakha nine houses, Leingangpokpi four houses, Jiribam Municipal Council ward numbers I, II, and IV 65 houses.

Relief camps have been opened at six locations —Kamranga Muslim Youth Club, Kamaranga government added Lower Primar School, Leingangpokpi Government Primary School, Islamabad Lower Primary School, and Ima market Jiribam.

However, no relief camp has so far opened at Stobekra and Butakhan villages despite the District Commissioner, Superintendent of police, and other high officials visiting and inspecting the flood-affected areas on Friday, the sources added.
