Constable killed, ASI injured in accident in Manipur

Imphal: A police constable was killed and an Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) injured when the vehicle they were escorting the Additional Superintendent of Police of the Moreh Police Station, Md. Riyaz met an accident on the National Highway 102 at Sinam village under the Tengnoupal district of Manipur bordering Myanmar on Friday morning, officials said.

The police Gypsy occupied by Md. Riyaz and his escorts met with an accident when the driver failed to control a U-turn at the Sinam village at around 6 am on Friday.

The vehicle was plying towards Moreh from Imphal. The police officer and driver of the Gypsy escaped unhurt in the accident.

However, the police constable Md. Abdul Latip, 35, died on the spot.

He was a resident of Sangaiyumphal village in Thoubal district and the son of the late Md. Rasid. The injured ASI was identified as Md. Yunush Khan of Urup Arapti village in Imphal East district.

He was immediately rushed to the JNIMS hospital where the doctors stated that the condition of the injured police personnel was out of danger.

The body of the killed constable is now lying at the mortuary of the JNIMS for post-mortem. Police registered a case and investigations are on in this regard, the police added.
