Centre issues notification for CBI probe into Assam online stock trading scam
Guwahati: The Central government has asked the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to probe the 41 cases, related to the online stock trading scam, registered in various police stations of Assam.
A notification, issued by the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions in this regard on Friday (October 11), was shared by the Assam Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) on microblogging site X late on Friday night.
“The Central government with the consent of the Assam government extends the powers and jurisdiction of the members of the Delhi Special Police Establishment throughout the state of Assam for the investigation of offences under relevant sections of IPC/BNS and other Acts as mentioned in the FIRs and any other law related to the 41 police cases, which are registered at various police stations in Assam concerning unregulated deposits involving fraudulent transactions and trading of large sums of money,” the notification stated.

The CMO stated that the Assam government, under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, has assured full cooperation to the CBI to ensure a swift investigation into these cases.
The online stock trading scam came to light in Assam in August 2024, when people who had invested huge amounts of money in a company owned by elusive Deepankar Barman, found that his office has been closed since August 21 this year and he is absconding.
After dozens of such online trading fraud cases were registered, the Assam cabinet decided to transfer the cases to the CBI for investigation.
So far, at least 65 people have been arrested in connection with the online stock trading scam.
Assamese actor-choreographer Sumi Borah and her photographer husband Tarkik Borah are among those who have been arrested in the scam.
