Bank holiday today in parts of Northeast, digital services to remain active
Guwahati: Banks in several parts of Northeast India, including Mizoram's Aizawl, will remain closed today, Friday, January 2, 2026, on account of New Year’s celebrations and Mannam Jayanthi, following the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) 2026 holiday calendar.
According to the RBI, banks in the region observe holidays under the Negotiable Instruments Act, which includes regional and national holidays, in addition to the mandatory weekly closures on the second Saturday and Sunday of each month. Citizens are advised to check branch-specific schedules before planning in-person visits.
In the Northeast, bank branches in Aizawl will remain closed today, while those in Guwahati, Imphal, Shillong, Itanagar, and Kohima will remain operational. Customers in these cities are advised to plan transactions accordingly.

The RBI noted that essential banking services will continue to function through digital and self-service platforms despite physical closures. These include:
- Online and mobile banking for fund transfers, balance inquiries, and bill payments
- NEFT and RTGS services, subject to operational windows
- ATM withdrawals and card transactions
- Requests for chequebooks, demand drafts, and account-related services
The central bank has also announced that banks across India will observe 10 holidays in January 2026. Citizens are urged to rely on digital banking platforms to ensure uninterrupted access to financial services during holidays.
