North Lakhimpur: A person was trampled to death by a wild jumbo in Lakhimpur’s Drupang.

The tragic incident took place on Friday (March 15) at midnight when a large number of wild elephants went berserk in Drupang village on Assam-Arunachal Pradesh boundary under Narayanpur Police Station.

The wild pachyderms entered the village and smashed houses storing grains. As villagers tried to chase away the Jumbos one Dimbeswar Phukan (50) got trampled.

Though the villagers made frantic calls to the nearest forest office, no response was made by them.

This made villagers furious when the forest personnel visited the village in the morning on Saturday.

Angry villagers complained that the forest department took no measures to check the menace of wild elephants in the area despite repeated demands.

Villagers allege that electric fencing on Arunachal Pradesh's side made the elephants move towards Assam.

They also blame rampant deforestation and massive extraction of earth from hills for the destruction of the natural habitats of elephants.
