GUWAHATI: In a significant push towards renewable energy, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the state will soon see the establishment of 38 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) stations.

The announcement was made during a virtual inauguration ceremony for five new CNG stations, held in Dispur.

The five newly inaugurated CNG stations, developed by Purba Bharati Gas Private Limited—a joint venture between Assam Gas Company Limited, Oil India Limited, and Gail Gas Limited—are strategically located in Ulubari, Sonapur, Lalmati, Kahilipara, and Azara localities of Guwahati.

The stations have been named COCO CNG Station, Ulubari; HP Sonapur, Sonapur; HKS Service Station, Lalmati; Bungrung Service Station, Kahilipara; and Ramani Service Station, Azara.

During the event, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the state is commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and transitioning towards cleaner energy sources.

"This inauguration marks a significant step in our ongoing mission to create a 'Greener Guwahati.' Our policy to phase out fossil fuels and embrace renewable energy is progressing steadily, and these CNG stations are crucial in this journey," he said.

The Assam chief minister highlighted that with these new additions, the total number of CNG stations in Kamrup Metro and Kamrup District has increased to seven.

He also shared that eight more stations are nearing completion, with work on an additional 15 stations actively underway.

In the Barak Valley, three CNG stations have already been completed, with two more under construction.

In addition to the expansion of CNG infrastructure, Sarma announced that Assam is on course to complete 3000 MW of solar power projects, significantly enhancing the state's renewable energy capacity.
