Guwahati: Assam will celebrate recognition of Assamese as a Classical Language with a week-long programme in November this year.

Terming the grant of Classical Language status to Assamese as a historic achievement, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday said Assam will celebrate this achievement with a week-long programme ‘Bhasa Gourav Saptah’ from November 3 to 9, 2024, the chief minister’s public relations cell said in a press statement.

“To celebrate this historic achievement, Assam will observe ‘Bhasa Gaurob Saptah’ from 3rd to 9th November 2024,” CM Sarma said.

“As a part of the Bhasa Gourav Saptah, universities, schools and civil society organisations will host special events to honour the contributions of Assamese writers and scholars, whose work has shaped the language since the 4th century AD,” he added.

The chief minister sought cooperation from all sections of the people of Assam to make the celebration of the ‘Bhasa Gourav Saptah’ a grand success, the statement added.

The Union Cabinet on October 3 approved conferring the status of Classical Language to Assamese, Marathi, Pali, Prakrit and Bengali languages.
