Kakoti is currently being interrogated by the police and likely to be produced before a court later on Wednesday (September 4, 2024).

“We have picked up Ranjit Kakoti after receiving a complaint against him. He has been arrested and is currently being interrogated in connection with an online investment scam in the name of a firm Trading FX,” a senior police official said.

According to the victims, Kakoti, a resident of Dibrugarh’s Jibon Phukan Nagar, has allegedly expanded his online investment fraud network across Assam. He has allegedly defrauded hundreds of people and swindled crores of rupees.

The accused, who allegedly did not even spare the economically poor, has amassed massive wealth by defrauding people. The victims are now demanding their money back and the accused be strictly punished.

The arrest of Kakoti comes days after the arrest of another alleged scammer Bishal Phukan who is ironically from the same town. Phukan is currently in police custody.

On the other hand, actor Sumi Borah, who allegedly helped Phukan in the online investment scam, has been absconding ever since the latter’s arrest. Her phone is reported to be switched off. The police now have summoned Borah’s brother for questioning.

Meanwhile, the Dibrugarh police have launched a massive crackdown against the online scammers and picked up several suspects for questioning.
