Assam: 15 injured in mob attack on TMPK leaders in North Lakhimpur
North Lakhimpur: At least 15 persons were injured when a mob attacked members of Takam Mising Poring Kebang (TMPK) in Uriumtola in Ghunasuti under North Lakhimpur Police Station.
The incident happened in the Naharani village on the banks of the Subansiri River on Sunday afternoon when delegates of the local TMPK unit were mediating a dispute between two parties.
While the discussions were on, a group of people suddenly attacked the TMPK leaders with sharp objects critically injuring four of them.
The remaining TMPK members escaped unharmed by swimming in the river.
The severely injured Manoram Taid, Dolison Payeng, Ramesh Payeng and Tanu Migam Taye were admitted to Lakhimpur Medical College Hospital later in the night.
According to one injured person, the attackers were Purandar Das, Kempa Das, Nripen Das, Ramen Das, Bapukan Das and Leela Chutia along with others from Bor Chapori came in boats and attacked them while the TMPK leaders were negotiating a family dispute between one Diganta Nath and Khireswar Nath.
Meanwhile, police from North Lakhimpur Police Station arrived on the spot and started investigating the incident.
No arrests have been made so far, as tensions between the two communities are simmering in the area.
