Imphal: Acting on specific intelligence of the presence of weapons and ammunition that were smuggled into the state for sabotage of the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections in Manipur, Assam Rifles along with Manipur police launched a joint operation at a hotspot in Manipur Tengnoupal district bordering Myanmar on the south.

Upon launching the operation at the suspected area of Trao Lamkhai village, in Tengnoupal District in Manipur, several arms, ammo, explosives, and warlike stores were recovered on Friday, an official said on Saturday.

In a joint search operation, one .303 rifle, two improvised mortars, four IEDs, fifteen grenades, and ammunition were recovered.

The recovered items have been handed over to the concerned police station for further legal action, the official added.

The operation was launched after Major General Ravroop of the Inspector General of Assam Rifles (South) reviewed the security measures along the borders on the same day.

Manipur which has two parliamentary constituencies will go to the Lok Sabha polls in two phases.

For the Outer PC seat, the poll will be held on April 29 and Inner PC seat on April 26.
