Nine agitators from Manipur arrested in Delhi

New Delhi/Imphal: Delhi police arrested nine agitators from Manipur who are demanding early restoration of peace and harmony in the strife state of Manipur.

The hunger strike launched under the leadership of Malem Thongam, a transgender and also president of the Lamyanba Irawat Memorial Integrated Trust, (LIMIT) was foiled by a team of the Burari police station, Delhi.

The president of the LIMIT along with eight volunteers was arrested at around 5 pm on Thursday on the charge of violating 144, CrPC in force in front of the Arts Faculty, Delhi University.

The strike was organized by the LIMIT in conjunction with the Delhi Meitei Coordinating Committee (DMCC) and the Manipuris residing in the national capital. Sources said that the arrested persons are continuing hunger strikes inside the police lockup.

The placards and banners seized by the police from the agitating spot read as “Hunger strike to restore peace and harmony in Manipur”, “Update NRC to Manipur”, “Abrogate SoO” and “Restore peace in Manipur.”
