Guwahati: Vehicles using expressways across India will face a 5 per cent increase in toll charges starting today, June 3, 2024.

This revision, originally planned for April 1st, was delayed due to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) implements this annual hike to adjust for inflation, basing the change on the Wholesale Price Index (WPI). There are approximately 855 toll plazas on national highways, categorized as either public-funded or concessionaire-operated.

This change comes amidst a significant rise in toll collection.

Government data shows collections exceeding Rs 50,000 crore by November 2023 in the financial year 2023-24.

This growth is attributed to an increase in tolled roads and the widespread adoption of FASTags, an electronic toll collection system.

National highway toll lengths have also nearly doubled in the past five years, rising from 25,996 km in FY19 to 45,428 km as of November 2023.

FASTag adoption has flourished since February 2021, when all lanes on national highway fee plazas became FASTag lanes.

As of November 2023, over 7.98 crore FASTags have been issued, with an average daily collection of Rs 147.31 crore via FASTag and an average of Rs 86.61 lakh daily transactions recorded in FY 2023-24.
