Guwahati: BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari is set to be sworn in as the new Chief Minister of West Bengal on Saturday, May 9, following his selection as the leader of the BJP legislature party.

The decision was finalised during a meeting of BJP legislators held in Kolkata in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Speaking after the meeting, Shah said all proposals submitted during the discussion supported Adhikari’s name for the post of Chief Minister.

The BJP secured a major victory in the recently concluded West Bengal Assembly elections, bringing an end to the Trinamool Congress government’s 15-year tenure in the state. The result was seen as a major political setback for Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Banerjee on May 5 stated that she would not step down from the Chief Minister’s post and alleged that the election outcome was the result of a conspiracy rather than a genuine public mandate.

Meanwhile, incidents of violence were reported from different parts of West Bengal after the declaration of election results on May 4.

In one such incident, Suvendu Adhikari’s personal assistant was shot dead by unidentified assailants in the Madhyamgram area of North 24 Parganas district on May 6.
