Guwahati: Supreme Court of India on Tuesday refused to grant an urgent hearing on a plea seeking enforcement of laws imposing a complete ban on cow slaughter ahead of the Eid al-Adha (Bakrid) festival.

The petition was filed by Satish Kumar Aggarwal, former vice-president of the Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha.

The plea sought directions for strict implementation of laws prohibiting the slaughter of cows and their progeny and also urged the court to direct state governments to frame guidelines regulating slaughterhouses in accordance with existing legal provisions.

A Bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi declined to accord urgent listing to the matter.

“You remembered this a day before. No urgency. Thanks,” the Bench remarked while refusing the request for immediate hearing.

Advocate Barun Kumar Sinha, appearing in the matter, had mentioned the plea before the court seeking urgent listing ahead of Bakrid.

“Day after tomorrow is Bakrid. This is a plea to seek implementation of anti-cow slaughter law. If this can be listed tomorrow,” Sinha submitted before the Bench.

The court, however, refused to entertain the request for urgent hearing.
