Guwahati: The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has formed a specialized textbook development team to create syllabi and textbooks on Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Classes 11 and 12, the Ministry of Education informed Parliament.

Answering a question in the Lok Sabha, the Ministry explained that the initiative supports the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023. The program aims to equip senior secondary students with advanced AI skills and computational thinking required for a rapidly evolving digital economy.

For younger students, NCERT has introduced an AI-based Animation and Games project in the Class 6 vocational education textbook. The project uses AI tools to give students early, hands-on exposure to practical applications of artificial intelligence through experiential learning.

The Ministry of Education highlighted, “Following NEP 2020 and NCF-SE 2023, NCERT has set up a textbook team to develop AI syllabi and textbooks for Grades 11 and 12. Additionally, Grade 6 vocational education includes a project on Animation and Games using AI tools.”

The government has reiterated its commitment to making Artificial Intelligence and Computational Thinking (AI & CT) core components of future-ready education. Starting from the 2026–27 academic session, AI education will expand to all schools from Class 3 onwards, aligning with nationwide education reforms.

Meanwhile, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has prepared a detailed curriculum for AI and computational thinking spanning Classes 3 to 12. The curriculum introduces foundational AI concepts in early grades and makes advanced computational thinking and AI mandatory for Classes 9 and 10, according to ANI reports.

To further strengthen AI education, the Government of India has launched SOAR (Skilling for AI Readiness), a national initiative aligned with NEP 2020, the National Programme on AI (NPAI) Skilling Framework, and the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision. SOAR aims to enhance AI literacy among teachers and build foundational AI skills among students from Classes 6 to 12.

Through these measures, the government seeks to prepare students and educators for the demands of a technology-driven future, while promoting inclusive digital growth across the country.
