Guwahati: At least eight people lost their lives and several others sustained injuries after a powerful explosion ripped through a car parked near Delhi's Red Fort Metro Station on Monday evening, officials confirmed.

Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud blast around 6:30 pm, followed by thick smoke and flames engulfing several nearby vehicles. Delhi Fire Services immediately dispatched seven fire tenders to the scene, bringing the blaze under control after an intense operation.

Authorities have cordoned off the entire area, which lies close to one of Delhi’s busiest heritage and tourist zones.

A team from the Delhi Police Special Cell and forensic experts reached the site shortly after the explosion to assess the extent of damage and collect evidence.

Although the exact cause of the explosion remains under investigation, preliminary reports suggest that the blast originated from a car parked near Gate No. 1 of the Red Fort Metro Station. Officials have not ruled out the possibility of a mechanical failure or an explosive device.

Videos circulating on social media show several cars ablaze as panic spread among commuters and bystanders. Emergency teams shifted the injured to nearby hospitals, while efforts are underway to identify the victims.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) confirmed that metro operations remain unaffected and trains are running normally across the network.

Meanwhile, the Delhi Police Commissioner has issued a citywide high alert, increasing security deployment at major landmarks, transport hubs, and crowded markets. Bomb disposal squads have also been placed on standby.

Authorities urged citizens to stay calm and avoid spreading unverified information. “The situation is under control, and a detailed investigation is in progress,” a senior police official stated.

This is a developing story, and more details are expected as the investigation unfolds.
