Delhi Police investigate Red Fort blast; nine killed, suspected Pulwama doctor identified
Guwahati: Delhi Police registered an FIR on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and the Explosives Act, following a car explosion near Red Fort that killed nine people and injured 20 others.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah convened a high-level security meeting to review the situation.
The meeting included Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, Intelligence Bureau Director Tapan Deka, Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha, and NIA DG Sadanand Vasant Date.
Jammu and Kashmir DGP Nalin Prabhat participated virtually. Shah confirmed that authorities are exploring all possibilities and conducting a thorough investigation.
The blast occurred around 6:52 pm on Monday in a Hyundai i20 carrying three people.
Police detained the car’s registered owner, Md Salman of Gurugram, who had sold the vehicle multiple times before it ended up with the suspected driver, Dr. Umar Mohammad, a Pulwama resident and doctor at Al Falah Medical College in Faridabad.
Security footage shows Umar parked the car near the Red Fort for over three hours before driving it toward the Metro traffic signal, where it exploded.
Investigators believe Umar detonated the car after authorities arrested his associates in connection with a terror module and seized 2,900 kg of explosives in Faridabad.
Sources said he used Ammonium Nitrate Fuel Oil (ANFO) with a detonator to execute the attack in a crowded area near the historic 17th-century monument. Umar’s family members have been detained in Jammu and Kashmir for questioning.
Police traced the car’s ownership chain, from Salman in Gurugram to Devender in Okhla, then to a person in Ambala, and finally to Umar.
Authorities continue to question multiple suspects, including Umar’s associates Aamir and Tariq. DNA samples from the blast site have been collected, and forensic reports on the explosives are awaited.
Delhi Chief Minister and Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai conveyed condolences and assured support for the victims’ families.
The judiciary observed a minute’s silence for the victims and reaffirmed its commitment to uphold the rule of law.
Authorities placed Delhi on high alert, intensifying security at airports, metro stations, bus terminals, and city borders.
The CISF also heightened vigilance across key public locations. Emergency teams rushed the injured to LNJP Hospital, and police continued large-scale searches in Faridabad and surrounding areas.
Investigations have revealed links between Umar Mohammad and doctors arrested in Faridabad over the past week, including Dr. Adeel Ahmad Rather and Dr. Muzammil Shakeel.
Police recovered firearms, live ammunition, and explosives from multiple locations.
Officials are also probing connections to a broader terror network, including plans targeting crowded markets and ideological institutions in Uttar Pradesh.
Officials briefed Prime Minister Modi on the situation, and he spoke with Amit Shah about the latest developments.
