Congress terms Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal's arrest as 'unconstitutional'
NEW DELHI: Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi and leader of the Aam Aadmi Party, was arrested by officials from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Thursday (March 21).
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) celebrated Kejriwal's arrest as a "triumph of truth", while numerous Congress leaders condemned it as an "assault on democracy" and deemed it 'unconstitutional'.
Senior Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi criticised the BJP-led NDA government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, describing the arrest of Arvind Kejriwal as 'unconstitutional'.
Priyanka Gandhi said, "Engage your critics in electoral battles, challenge them openly, and critique their policies and methods—that's democracy. However, leveraging institutional power to achieve political goals and thereby undermining those institutions goes against democratic principles."
Expressing concern over the current circumstances surrounding the Delhi chief minister, Congress leader Udit Raj remarked that the extensive police presence around the CM's residence has transformed it into what resembles a 'camp', portraying Arvind Kejriwal as if he were a 'bandit'.
In contrast, BJP leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa characterized Arvind Kejriwal's arrest as a "victory of truth".
"On this day, truth prevails. Arvind Kejriwal, Delhi's most corrupt chief minister, has been apprehended by the ED. I want to convey to the nation that this signifies the eradication of corruption in Delhi. He is facing consequences for his wrongdoing," he said.
