GUWAHATI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is slated to address a massive BJP election rally in Assam on April 17, coinciding with the vibrant celebrations of Rongali Bihu.

Sources from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) revealed that PM Narendra Modi will visit Assam on April 17 to address an election rally at Bidanchal ground in Borkura, located in Nalbari district of Assam under the Barpeta Lok Sabha constituency.

Preparations are underway to ensure the success of the rally, with an expected turnout of over two lakh attendees.

Local MLA and Assam minister Jayanta Malla Baruah has reportedly been tasked to oversee the preparations for the Prime Minister’s visit.

This rally signifies PM Modi’s maiden election address in Assam since the announcement of the election notification for Lok Sabha polls.

Notably, BJP leaders and workers in Assam are actively gearing up for the Prime Minister’s visit.

It may be mentioned here that the BJP delegated the Barpeta constituency to its ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) for Lok Sabha elections, with MLA Phani Bhushan Choudhary announced as its candidate.

Traditionally, the Barpeta constituency has been a stronghold of the Congress, with victories also recorded by the CPI-M and AIUDF in the past.

The constituency has witnessed the election of six minority leaders and three Hindu leaders as MPs.

Following constituency delimitation, three minority-dominated assembly constituencies—Jania, Chenga, and Baghbor—were newly established, while Nalabari, Tihu, and Hajo-Suwalkuchi were included as new entries.

The constituency boasts a total electorate of 19,49,873, comprising 9,88,570 men and 9,61,303 women.

In a related development, union home minister Amit Shah is scheduled to visit Gohpur on April 8, where he will campaign for BJP candidate Ranjit Dutta from the Sonitpur Lok Sabha seat in Assam.
