Dimapur: The Nagaland government, in collaboration with the British Deputy High Commission, Kolkata, will commemorate Remembrance Day at the Kohima War Cemetery, maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, on Tuesday.

Remembrance Day, also known as Poppy Day due to the tradition of wearing a remembrance poppy, is observed in Commonwealth member states since the end of the First World War to honour members of the armed forces who died in the line of duty.

The day is also observed in several non-Commonwealth countries as a tribute to war heroes.

In most countries, Remembrance Day is marked on November 11 to commemorate the end of hostilities in the First World War.

Hostilities ceased at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, following the armistice signed by representatives of Germany and the Entente between 5:12 and 5:20 that morning.

Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio will grace the programme as the special guest, while Bhaarat Dave, Deputy Head of Mission, British Deputy High Commission, Kolkata, will be the honoured guest.

The formal commemoration programme will be followed by a band performance by the Nagaland Territorial Army, after which a vintage car rally will be flagged off.
