Nagaland: JP Nadda inspects landslide-hit Mon district
Dimapur: Union Health and Family Welfare Minister JP Nadda, along with Assam Health and Family Welfare Minister Ashok Singhal and Nagaland Rajya Sabha MP Phangnon Konyak, visited landslide-affected areas in Mon town on Wednesday to take stock of the situation.
During the visit, Nadda inspected the landslide-affected locations in Defence Colony and adjoining areas of Techa Ward.
Eight people reportedly died in the landslides in these areas.
Nadda also interacted with affected families at the Konyak Union office.
He expressed solidarity with the affected people, saying the incident was deeply disheartening and painful.
Nadda assured that the Government of India would leave no stone unturned to support the affected areas and their restoration. He also said that a central team would visit the affected areas to assist with the relief operations.
Mon Deputy Commissioner Wennyei Konyak briefed the delegation on the disaster situation in the district, stating that incessant heavy rainfall had triggered floods and landslides in several locations.
He said roads, bridges, and public infrastructure had suffered extensive damage.
Assistant Manager (Response and Communication), Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority, and Nodal Officer (Disaster Management), Mon District Disaster Management Authority, Rendemo Shitio, said in a PowerPoint presentation that incessant monsoon rainfall on July 19 and 20 triggered catastrophic landslides and flash floods across Mon district, causing loss of life, widespread destruction of homes and agricultural land, and the complete blockage of critical arterial routes.
He said the district recorded 83.95 mm of rainfall on July 19, while the cumulative rainfall between July 19 and July 31 stood at 341 mm.
