Dimapur: Nagaland police have activated intensive checking of movement of suspected illegal immigrants at various inter-state entry points and check gates and set up three checking counters at Dimapur railway station round the clock, Dimapur commissioner of police Kevithuto Sophie said in a release on Saturday.

The Dimapur police’s move follows the reported influx of illegal immigrants into Nagaland.

Sophie urged the public, NGOs and civil society organisations to contact the police control room at 7085055050 for initiating immediate action.

Meanwhile, the Rising People’s Party (RPP) on Saturday called for launching Survival Nagaland Movement 2 on the issue of illegal immigration.

In a statement, the RPP said while stakeholders, especially the Naga Students Federation, over the decades have made many actionable moves to curb the influx, the society at large the CSOs,  tribal bodies, youth organisations, student organisations and the  political parties - needs to come together.

The party said taking inspiration from the Survival Nagaland campaign launched by the Ao Students Union in 2007, it is imperative that a pan-Nagaland youth force/body tasked solely for the purpose of checking illegal immigration in the state be formed without delay.

“For starters, the tribal bodies/student bodies/youth bodies of the foothill areas of Nagaland may take the lead in forming the foothill area youth force,” it said.

The RPP said though “our society” is deeply divided due to various contentious issues, the issue of illegal immigration is an existential threat for “our people” and that unity is the need of the hour in tackling the issue.

It appealed to all the patriotic people of the state, especially the tribal youth bodies, to consider its suggestion with an open mind.
