Dimapur: Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on Saturday launched the digitisation of old manual birth and death certificates in his official chamber in Kohima. The initiative aims to modernise the state’s vital records system and improve service delivery.

During the launch, Rio said the project will streamline services and ensure accurate data. He added that it will improve citizen access to essential documents. Moreover, he said the system will help the government frame informed public policies.

The chief minister praised the Economics and Statistics Department for implementing the digitisation project. He also urged citizens to register births and deaths on time to ensure accurate and updated records.

Following a directive from the Office of the Registrar General of India (ORGI), the department introduced online registration of births and deaths in Nagaland in April 2022. Since then, the state has gradually moved towards a fully digital system.

Officials said the department will soon discontinue the issuance of manual certificates. The system will shift to 100 per cent online registration and the digitisation of old manual records. As a result, authorities expect faster services and reduced paperwork.

The department said digitising old manual certificates has become essential to integrate all records into the online system. The move will also safeguard the authenticity and accessibility of records for future use.

Officials clarified that the department will digitise only genuine certificates issued by registrars of births and deaths. The system will rely strictly on information available in official records.

The department urged the public to use the ORGI portal at dc.crsorgi.gov.in  to access the facility. Officials said the move will help build a comprehensive and secure database of vital records for Nagaland.
