Kohima: The Nagaland government has put restrictions on the sale of packaged drinking water in the state without obtaining a Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) license.

The Nagaland health department has issued a reminder to packaged drinking water (PDW) manufacturers and suppliers stating the necessity of obtaining a BIS license.

This license is a prerequisite for securing a Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) license or registration.

The Nagaland health department stated that ensuring the availability of clean and safe drinking water is not just a public health priority but a fundamental human right.

It is imperative for PDW manufacturers and suppliers to adhere to strict hygiene and safety standards to safeguard public health, the department stated.

The department has also clarified that any import of packaged drinking water or mineral water from outside Nagaland must be accompanied by BIS certification to be permitted for sale within the state.

Failure to adhere to these guidelines will result in penalties under sections 58 and 63 of the Food Safety and Standards Act 2006.

The Nagaland government’s directive aims to ensure that all drinking water supplied to the public meets the highest standards of safety and quality.
