Nagaland: Pork prices surge in Dimapur by 16%
DIMAPUR: Pork, a cherished delicacy among the Nagas, has become more expensive in Dimapur, Nagaland.
Pork prices at Dimapur in Nagaland were hiked following a price revision by the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC), with wholesale and retail prices witnessing hikes of over 18% and 16%, respectively.
The decision to revise prices came during a coordination meeting on February 22 in response to a representation submitted by the Pork Wholesalers of Dimapur requesting a review of existing rates.
The wholesale price of pork was increased from Rs 215 to Rs 255 per kilogram, marking a significant 18.6% rise.
Similarly, the price of dressed pork rose from Rs 300 to Rs 350 per kilogram, representing a hike of over 16%.
Additionally, the rate of offal (head, hoof, intestine, etc.) experienced an upward revision of over 15%, climbing from Rs 260 to Rs 300 per kilogram.
These revisions followed extensive deliberations, including a comparative study of rates from neighbouring states submitted by a sub-committee, and consideration of grievances shared by the Pork Butcher Union, Dimapur, and Pork Wholesaler, Dimapur.
In addition to the price adjustments, the meeting mandated the compulsory use of digital weighing scales in every pork butcher shop.
Shops operating without a Trade License were directed to obtain a temporary permit from the concerned authority, with non-compliant businesses facing restrictions.
Furthermore, each shop was instructed to prominently display the rate chart, as per the directives of the DMC. This marks the third price adjustment in less than a year, following revisions in May and June 2023.
