Nagaland: Northeast’s first AC green EV launched in Dimapur

Dimapur: An air-conditioned green electric vehicle (EV) was launched on the occasion of World Tourism Day in Dimapur on Friday as part of the Greenland Nagaland’s tourists’ facilitation programme in Nagaland.

MLA and Nagaland’s adviser to food and civil supply, legal metrology and consumer protection KT Sukhalu who graced the occasion as the special guest launched the vehicle.

An affiliate of Nagaland tourism department, Greenland Nagaland’s 14-seater green electric vehicle is fitted with Global Positioning System (GPS) and Public Address (PA) system - the first of its kind in the entire Northeastern region.

In his address, Sukhalu emphasised the need for sustainable tourism practices in the state, highlighting how eco-friendly transportation is the need of the hour. 

Underlining the importance of environmental consciousness in Nagaland, the legislator urged citizens and various organisations of the state to play an active role in preserving the state’s natural beauty.

Highlighting that Nagaland’s pollution levels are relatively low compared to other states, he noted that the influx of condemned vehicles from outside and the growing number of privately owned vehicles are contributing to congestion and pollution.

Sukhalu suggested that Greenland Nagaland explore partnerships with other districts and private parties to speed up the process of extending their environmental initiatives all over the state.

He said the state government has formed a committee under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio to develop innovative schemes for environmental sustainability.

Additionally, Sukhalu said the Investment and Development Authority of Nagaland has proposed purchasing buses to transport tourists during the yearly Hornbill Festival. 

He recommended that Greenland Nagaland collaborate with the state tourism department to introduce green buses as part of this initiative.

The MLA from Zunheboto constituency commended Greenland Nagaland for its initiative to introduce the electric vehicle which is expected to attract tourists and encourage green tourism in the state. 

He also lauded the organisation for its efforts in keeping Nagaland’s environment pristine and called for the expansion of its initiatives to other districts.

In his keynote address, secretary of Greenland Nagaland Swaraj Mukherjee dwelt on his organisation’s vision for integrating modern technology into Nagaland’s tourism sector.

He expressed optimism that the green electric vehicle will set a benchmark for sustainable tourism practices in the Northeastern region.
