Nagaland floods: One washed away in Noklak, paddy fields and roads damaged in Kiphire

Dimapur: One person was washed away by the gushing water of Ngühaiu river in Noklak district of Nagaland on Monday (July 01).

The body of Pushing Khiamniungan (30), a driver by profession, from Kengkhaio Kusong village in Noklak district of Nagaland was recovered on Tuesday (July 02).

He was washed away by water currents while crossing the river.

Meanwhile, incessant rains and subsequent landslides and floods continued to affect Chessore area under Shamator district of Nagaland.

The Chessore-Huker-Y Anner valley, known as the rice bowl, was the worst affected area where almost 60% of paddy fields were swept away by rain water.

The incessant rain also triggered landslides and mudslides with reports of road blockage at various locations in the region.

The road from Tuensang to Shamator via Y Anner village and Shiponger village was damaged by flood waters.

According to an official report, the Müksük-Ke bridge is also on the verge of collapse.

The bailey bridge between Shiponger and Leangkonger villages was also badly damaged.

Y Anner Village Council chairman Y Rikhum appealed to the Nagaland government to reach out to the people affected by the disaster.

The Zhelo Chessore Village Council also appealed to the district administration, NPWD, SDRF and all departments concerned to extend assistance to the affected Chessore area public by way of immediate relief and also clear the roads affected by the landslides.

Incessant rains also caused soil erosion and damaged paddy fields in Kiphire district of Nagaland.

Meanwhile, the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) on Tuesday said the state will experience heavy to extremely severe rainfall till July 8.

In its weather update, the NSDMA said during this period, extremely heavy rainfall is expected in the districts of Kohima, Phek, Wokha, Zunheboto, Kiphire, Noklak, Shamator and Tuensang.

The district-wise weather warning showed that Kiphire, Phek, Noklak, Shamator and Tuensang districts are likely to experience the most rain among the districts in Nagaland.

For these five districts, an orange colour alert has been issued from July 2 to July 4.

Due to the likelihood of excessive precipitation in the hill sector, Nagaland's lowland and foothill regions, including Dimapur, Niuland, Chumukedima, Bhandari, Pangti, Tizit, and Tuli, are likely to be impacted by inundated water logging and flash floods.

All the major rivers of the State will experience a surge in water level, the NSDMA said.

It asked all the district disaster management authorities and other line departments to be on alert to save lives and properties during this monsoon period.
