Nagaland: Dimapur Commissioner of Police prohibits unauthorised firearms in Sekrenyi Festival
Guwahati: In a move to ensure any untoward incidents, the Dimapur Commissioner of Police Kevithuto Sophie has on Friday issued a notice stating that there will be an absolute prohibition on the usage of unauthorized and unlicensed firearms during the Sekrenyi Festival that starts on Saturday to be organized at Dimapur State Stadium.
The said festival which is also called mini hornbill festival is one of the prime festivals of the Angami community.
The festival is also called Phousnyi by the Angamis and is celebrated to signify purification and sanctification before going to war.
A ritual is performed which is known as Kizie, in which a few drops of rice water are extracted from the top of a big jug called Zumho and are put into leaves.
However, the most important ceremony is performed on the eighth day, where bridge-pulling or gate-pulling is performed.
The IPS officer has notified all that “no unauthorized/unlicensed firearms of any type will be allowed to be brought near the vicinity of the place of function, for safety concern of all the participants and civil residents around the State Stadium, Dimapur.”
