Imphal: A monolith dedicated to Heipou Jadonang, a prominent Naga spiritual leader and political activist, was destroyed by unknown assailants in Manipur's Tamenglong district.

The incident occurred ahead of the 93rd anniversary of his execution by British colonial authorities.

Local police have registered a case and are investigating the vandalism. Despite the setback, the Haipou Jadonang Death Anniversary Committee (HJDAC) commemorated the day with various events across the state.

The main commemoration took place at Haipou Jadonang Memorial Park in Imphal, organized by the Zeliangrong Union (AMN). However, due to the ongoing unrest in Manipur, the event was held in a low-key manner.

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh paid tribute to Jadonang on social media, recognizing his significant contributions to the region's history.

The Coordination Committee (CorCom) also issued a statement honoring Jadonang's legacy and his struggle for Manipur's sovereignty.

Heipou Jadonang, also known as Jadonang Malangmei, was a revered figure among the Naga people.

He founded the Heraka religious movement, drawing inspiration from ancestral Naga traditions. Jadonang was wrongfully accused of sedition and murder by British authorities and was subsequently executed in 1931.

His disciple, Rani Gaidinliu, carried on his legacy and continues to be celebrated as a freedom fighter.
