Rising number of daily-wage labourers threatens Mizoram's social fabric, warns Congress

Aizawl: Mizoram’s opposition Congress party on Friday expressed serious concern over the growing number of daily-wage labourers in the state, warning that the trend could trigger deep-rooted social inequality and division if left unchecked.
Speaking at a political session held at the Congress Bhavan here, Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) General Secretary Lalbiakzama said the issue of landlessness among workers requires urgent attention and long-term policy solutions.
“We now have quite a number of landless daily-wage labourers in Mizoram. In the long run, this will lead to severe discrimination and social inequality in our society. We need to start thinking about a solution right now,” he said.
Lalbiakzama also cautioned the public, particularly young people, against being swayed by what he described as unrealistic political promises.
In a sharp critique of political narratives made allegedly by ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) leaders, including Chief Minister Lalduhoma, the Congress leader said that developmental claims, including promises of achieving state self-sufficiency within three years and generating 2,400 MW of power from the Darzo River, were impractical and intended to mislead voters.
“If anyone makes such promises to us, consider it an insult to the youth. Youth of Mizoram, let us wake up,” Lalbiakzama said.
Taking a jibe at the BJP, the Congress leader also cautioned people against falling into the party’s traps.
He claimed that the BJP’s agenda threatens the land and could adversely affect Mizoram’s culture and religious identity.
Lalbiakzama alleged that India’s economic and governance indicators have deteriorated under BJP rule.
He said the value of the Indian currency has steadily depreciated to levels comparable with those of economically weaker neighboring nations.
He also highlighted systemic failures, alleging that examination paper leaks have occurred at least six times under the current BJP administration without any minister or official taking responsibility.
He further referred to repeated examination paper leak incidents and questioned the accountability of government ministers.
The MPCC leader further asserted that the Indian National Congress is gradually regaining political ground nationally and said that ongoing Cockroach Janata Party (CJP)-, student-, and citizen-led protests are having a significant impact on the BJP.
