Preparations for elections to Mizoram Lok Sabha seat gets underway in Aizawl

AIZAWL: Aizawl district is gearing up for elections to the lone Lok Sabha seat in Mizoram, with preparations in full swing, announced an official on Monday (March 18).

Aizawl's deputy commissioner (DC) and returning officer, Nazuk Kumar, stated in a press conference that training for various official teams involved in the polls across 12 assembly constituencies within Aizawl district of Mizoram is nearing completion.

She highlighted that the initial phase of training for polling parties is scheduled for March 26 and March 27, with 24 master trainers overseeing the process.

Kumar also informed that the randomization of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trails (VVPATs) has been finalized, and they are securely stored in designated strong rooms for each assembly constituency.

For Aizawl district, 514 ballot units, 523 control units, and 541 VVPATs have been allocated for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

The polling for Mizoram's lone Lok Sabha seat is slated for April 19, with vote counting scheduled for June 4. The deadline for filing nominations is March 27, and candidates can withdraw their candidatures until March 30.

In terms of voter demographics, Kumar revealed that a total of 2,90,058 electorates, including 1,53,080 female voters, are expected to participate in the polls from Aizawl district. Additionally, there are 10,131 first-time voters, 1,439 senior citizens aged 85 and above, and 778 Persons with Disabilities (PwD) voters.

Aizawl district comprises 321 polling stations, with 48 being exclusively managed by women and one manned by differently-abled persons in each assembly constituency. Special arrangements, including home voting facilities, will be provided for senior citizens aged 85 and above and PwD voters possessing disability certificates.

Kumar emphasized efforts to encourage voter turnout and sought public cooperation to ensure free and fair elections.
