AIZAWL: At least 3,650 government employees in Mizoram are proxies or substitute employees employed by actual employees on their behalf.

Of those who employed proxies, 2,070 govt employees said they had to do it due to health reasons while 703 of them cited domestic problems.

At least 350 staffers said they were compelled to employ substitutes for reasons such as absence of residential quarters, inaccessibility of the villages where they were being posted and language problems.

About 90 govt employees didn't cite any specific reason for the same, while 35 said they did so following orders from higher authorities.

Forty-three employees said they had to employ substitutes as they were pursuing higher studies, while 74 others had wide-ranging reasons for doing the same.

The school education department has the most number of substitute employees at 1,115, followed by the state health and family welfare department which has 624 proxies and the power and electricity department with 253 proxies.

Chief Minister Lalduhoma said the state cabinet will consider the cases of substitutes being employed by govt employees and take a final decision.

The cabinet meeting will decide whether the services of those employees unfit to work will be terminated or not, Lalduhoma said.

Mizoram has about 45,000-50,000 state govt employees. The state govt had sought information about the substitute employees from all the departments last December.
