Mizoram: ZPM sweeps Aizawl civic polls, wins 17 of 19 wards

Aizawl: The ruling Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) on Monday secured a decisive victory in the Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) elections, winning 17 of the 19 wards in the civic body.
Vote counting was conducted at the office of the Aizawl Deputy Commissioner and concluded without incident, officials said. The results were subsequently declared by the Mizoram State Election Commission.
The outcome marks a significant setback for the Mizo National Front (MNF), which had dominated the 2021 AMC elections with 11 seats but was reduced to a single ward this time. The Indian National Congress also secured one seat.
For the ZPM, the result represents a sharp rise from its performance in the previous civic polls, where it had won six seats. The party’s sweeping mandate consolidates its position in the state’s urban political landscape.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which contested 11 wards, failed to win any seat.
All three principal parties — ZPM, MNF and the Congress fielded candidates in all 19 wards. In total, 68 candidates, including 28 women, were in the fray. Six wards were reserved for women, all of which were won by ZPM candidates.
According to the State Election Commission, voter turnout stood at 62.77% in the April 21 polls, with over 2.39 lakh eligible voters. State Election Commissioner H. Lalthlangliana said counting began at 8 a.m. and proceeded smoothly, with early trends indicating a strong lead for the ZPM across several wards.
The AMC, constituted in 2010 under the Mizoram Municipalities Act, 2007, comprises 19 wards. The inaugural civic polls were won by the Congress, while the MNF had swept the subsequent elections in 2015 and 2021.
