Aizawl: Renowned Mizo lyricist and former civil servant V. Thangzama passed away at the age of 91.

The lyricist, who was widely respected for his contribution to Mizo music and literature, died at Aizawl Hospital on Thursday night, according to family sources.

Originally from Ngopa in present-day Saitual district, Thangzama composed 44 songs and translated 17 others during his lifetime.

Apart from his literary achievements, he was also among the first Mizos to join the Assam Civil Service before later entering the Mizoram Civil Service.

He retired from government service in January 1994.

He was laid to rest at his locality in Aizawl’s Dawrpui Vengthar on Friday.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Lalduhoma expressed profound grief over the demise of the renowned Mizo songwriter, describing his death as a great loss to the Mizo community and the Young Mizo Association (YMA).

He recalled that Thangzama composed several iconic songs, along with many inspirational songs that strengthened the spirit and identity of the Mizos.

Remembering his contributions, Lalduhoma noted that Thangzama was honoured with the Mizo Academy Award in 2013 for his exceptional contribution to Mizo music and songwriting.

He said Thangzama’s works instilled patriotism, promoted the ideals of the YMA, and enriched the community with timeless hymns of praise and unity.
