Mizoram police seize meth, heroin worth Rs 41.64 crore, arrest three
Aizawl: In a major drug haul, Mizoram police seized huge quantities of methamphetamine tablets and heroin, altogether worth Rs. 41.64 crore, in two separate operations over the past two days, police said in a statement on Friday.
Two Assamese and one Manipur resident were arrested for possessing the contraband, it said.
In an operation on Thursday night, a team of CID (Special Branch) recovered and seized 49.244 kilograms of methamphetamine tablets, also known as YABA, from a 12-wheeler TATA truck on the northeastern outskirts of Aizawl, it added.
Two persons, identified as Atabur Rahman Mazumder (45) and Abdur Rahman Chowdhury (29), both residents of Assam's Hailakandi, have been arrested for possessing the contraband worth Rs. 39.39 crore, it said.
A case has been registered at the Special Narcotics Police Station in Aizawl under sections 22(c), 25, and 27 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, the statement said.
In another operation, Saitual police seized 1.12 kilograms of heroin concealed in 89 soap cases from a car while it was heading towards Aizawl on Friday, it said.
The driver of the car, identified as Jamminlal Touthang (28), a resident of Manipur, has been arrested and booked under relevant sections of the NDPS Act for transporting the consignment worth Rs. 2.25 crore, it added.
Further investigation of both cases is underway, the statement said.
This is the second major drug haul in Mizoram in the past two days.
Earlier on Thursday, the Border Security Force (BSF) and Mizoram Excise and Narcotics Department seized 14.905 kg of methamphetamine tablets and 707 grams of heroin, altogether worth over Rs. 26 crore, during a joint operation on NH-6 between Seiling and Tuirial near Aizawl.
