Mizoram: Over 9 kg methamphetamine seized in Lawngtlai; two arrested

Aizawl: In one of the major drug seizures reported from southern Mizoram this year, a joint team comprising the Excise and Narcotics Department, Assam Rifles, and other enforcement agencies seized more than 9 kg of methamphetamine tablets from Lawngtlai district near the Myanmar border, the Excise Department said in a statement on Thursday.
Two persons have been arrested in connection with the seizure, it said.
The operation was carried out on May 26 at AOC Veng locality in Lawngtlai, following specific intelligence inputs received by the security agencies.
During the raid, officials recovered 9.807 kg of methamphetamine tablets, estimated to contain around one lakh tablets in total.
The accused have been identified as Lalrammuana (47) and Lalrinpuia (44), both residents of Aizawl’s Armed Veng neighbourhood.
Authorities also seized a Mahindra Bolero vehicle, which was allegedly used to transport the narcotics consignment.
According to preliminary investigations, the methamphetamine tablets were brought from Aizawl and were allegedly meant for distribution in Lawngtlai when the accused were intercepted by the joint enforcement team.
A case has been registered against the duo under Section 21(c) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.
They were subsequently produced before the District Court in Lawngtlai.
If convicted under the section, the accused may face imprisonment ranging from 10 to 20 years, along with fines between Rs 1 lakh and Rs 2 lakh.
