Aizawl: The Mizoram government is actively working to enhance and expand the Goods and Services Tax (GST) base in line with ongoing national GST reforms.

On September 19, Vice Chairman of the Mizoram Resource Mobilisation Committee (MRMC), Haukhuma Hauzel, chaired a meeting attended by MRMC members, officials from the State Taxation Department, and leaders of the Aizawl City Local Council Association.

The discussion focused on ways to broaden the state’s GST base and improve compliance among local traders.

During the meeting, participants emphasized the importance of collaboration with local councils to increase the number of registered shopkeepers paying GST in the state capital.

As per GST regulations, traders with an annual turnover exceeding Rs 20 lakh, or a monthly income above Rs 1.75 lakh, must register for GST.

However, authorities have found that many traders in Aizawl and other districts, despite meeting the income threshold, have not registered or are evading GST payments.

To tackle this issue, the meeting proposed strengthening coordination between the Taxation Department and local councils to identify unregistered traders and ensure compliance.

The Mizoram government expects this collaborative approach to improve enforcement and boost GST revenue across the state.
