Mizoram: Eight women arrested with heroin worth Rs 70 lakh

Aizawl: Eight women were arrested for possessing 352 grams of heroin worth Rs 70 lakh in a series of operations in eastern Mizoram’s Champhai district on Wednesday, police said in a statement.
Most of the seizures were made during routine vehicle inspections at the Khankawn check gate on the outskirts of Champhai, a key transit point for vehicles travelling towards Aizawl, it said.
Another seizure was made at the Indo–Myanmar Friendship Bridge in Zokhawthar.
In the first case, Champhai police intercepted a passenger identified as Lalhriatzuali (23), a resident of Champhai’s Dinthar Veng locality, at around 12:30 pm, the statement said.
During a personal search, she allegedly produced three soap cases containing heroin weighing about 29 grams, valued at Rs 5.8 lakh.
The contraband was reportedly concealed inside her undergarments.
About 30 minutes later, Hmangaihzuali (37) of Niawhtlang village in south Mizoram’s Siaha district was found carrying 40 grams of heroin worth Rs 8 lakh.
Police said the drugs had been hidden inside her socks and waistband.
At the same checkpoint, Lianneihmawii (21) of Tuirial, Aizawl, was allegedly found in possession of 12 grams of heroin, valued at around Rs 2.4 lakh.
In the largest seizure of the day, police intercepted a maxicab at around 3 pm and recovered 180 grams of heroin from a travel bag belonging to Wesley Thangmawii (19) of Aizawl’s Bethlehem Vengchhak, according to police.
The seized contraband was estimated to be worth around Rs 36 lakh.
Later in the evening, personnel conducting checks on arrivals from Myanmar at the Indo–Myanmar Friendship Bridge in Zokhawthar intercepted Lalengmawii (50) of Champhai’s Zotlang.
A search of her market bag led to the recovery of 36 grams of heroin worth Rs 7.2 lakh.
The final case was detected at about 9:30 pm when police searched Lalkrosshlumawii (24), a resident of Thuampui in Aizawl. Fifty-five grams of heroin packed in soap cases and worth Rs 11 lakh were recovered from her clothing, the statement said.
