AIZAWL: Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) in Mizoram on Friday directed all street vendors along the national highway between Thuampui and Falkland area to immediately vacate their shops or stop selling fruits in non-vending zones.

The corporation said that disciplinary action will be taken starting from Saturday against any vendor failing to obtain permission.

A discussion was held on Friday between AMC officials led by deputy mayor R Thanglura and leaders of Thuampui local council to arrive at an agreement.

Thanglura said that the AMC will go as per its earlier decision and has re-instructed the street vendors to close their shops.

He said that people who illegally constructed buildings for shops in the non-vending zone along the national highway between Thuampui and Falkland are also asked to dismantle their buildings.

Some vendors have built assam-type buildings for shops along the non-vending zone.

The deputy mayor said that the AMC is taking steps to ensure that the vendors sell fruits and vegetables as per the vending regulation act.

He said that a collective discussion involving AMC mayor, Thuampui local council and vendors will be held to decide the future of those who face more inconvenience in closing their shops.

Around 30 families are illegally selling fruits along the restricted or non-vending zone between Thuampui and Falkland.

Meanwhile, vendors claimed that the AMC has provided a permission to open shops in the area in 2020 and vendor licenses were issued to them next year.

They said that they paid Rs 500 per month to Thuampui local council as rent for opening shops in the area.

Vendors also claimed that they earned their living from opening the shops.
