Mizoram: 16 killed, 581 houses damaged in natural disasters last year
Aizawl: At least 16 people lost their lives and hundreds of houses were damaged in different natural disasters across Mizoram over the past year, the state government informed the Assembly on Thursday.
Replying to a query raised by Mizo National Front legislator K. Laldawngliana, State Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Minister Lalnilawma said that a series of natural calamities, including landslides, heavy rainfall and cyclonic storms—were responsible for the fatalities during the period under review.
In a written response, the minister stated that the government has provided ex gratia assistance of Rs 4 lakh each to the families of the victims who lost their lives in these disasters.
The calamities also caused widespread damage to property across several parts of the state.
According to Lalnilawma, a total of 581 houses were affected due to landslides and other weather-related incidents over the past year.
He further informed the Assembly that families whose homes were damaged have received financial assistance from the government, with compensation ranging from Rs 4,000 to Rs 1.3 lakh depending on the type of house and the extent of the damage.
