Bairabi-Sairang railway line to boost state's economy, reduce logistics costs: Mizoram Governor
Aizawl: Mizoram Governor Vijay Kumar Singh on Friday hailed the newly inaugurated Bairabi-Sairang railway line as a significant development for the state, Raj Bhavan sources said.
The 51.38-km railway project was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 13, bringing Mizoram onto the country’s railway network.
The new line connects Mizoram's capital, Aizawl, with the rest of the country for the first time.
During an interaction with a 13-member media team from the Press Information Bureau (PIB) Cochin at Raj Bhavan, Singh said the railway line would improve transportation, reduce the cost of goods, lower logistics expenses, and provide more accessible and efficient connectivity in the state, the sources said.
The Governor informed the visiting journalists that the railway line is planned to be integrated with the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project (KMMTTP) and noted that the remaining stretch of over 200 km is expected to be completed within the scheduled timeframe.
Singh added that while agriculture remains the primary livelihood for most of Mizoram’s population and large-scale industries are yet to develop, the state has potential for future growth, the sources said.
He mentioned sectors such as tourism, organic products, high-quality ginger and turmeric, chili, aromatic and medicinal plants, rubber, bamboo-based industries, and other areas of economic interest.
Singh also said that both the Central and state governments are implementing key development projects in the state.
The media team, led by PIB Cochin director Dhanya Sanal K, also visited Assam to study and report on various development projects.
Dhanya told the Governor that the objective of the press tour was to allow journalists to study and report on the Centre’s initiatives in the Northeast and to provide an opportunity to explore the region firsthand.
During the meeting, the team shared their observations on Mizoram’s traffic management, civic awareness, and women-focused initiatives.
