In Mizoram, VP applauds Northeast’s role in India's developmental odyssey

AIZAWL: Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar emphasized the crucial role of the Northeast region in India’s developmental journey during his address to the Mizoram assembly on Monday (February 26).

Highlighting India's progress as the fifth-largest global economy, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar underscored the significant contributions of the Northeast, including Mizoram, in achieving this milestone.

He praised the Northeast’s exponential growth over the past decade, attributing it to the government's Act East policy.

Dhankhar commended the North East Council (NEC) for its pivotal role in infrastructure development, citing achievements such as the construction of over 12,000 km of roads, establishment of 700 MW power plants, and the emergence of numerous national institutions.

He emphasized the transformative impact of enhanced connectivity and infrastructure, labelling them as game-changers for Northeast.

Dhankhar also highlighted India's successful presidency of the G20, which not only elevated the country's global stature but also benefitted states like Mizoram through increased tourism opportunities.

Acknowledging Mizoram's untapped potential in tourism, horticulture, and local arts, Dhankhar urged the assembly to devise a forward-looking roadmap for development that aligns with India's aspirations for 2047.

He announced ongoing infrastructure projects such as the Aizawl bypass road and bamboo link roads under the PM-DevINE scheme, expected to boost tourism in the state significantly.

Dhankhar commended the legislators for maintaining discipline and decorum in the assembly, setting a positive example for others.

In response, Mizoram chief minister Lalduhoma expressed gratitude for the support received from the Vice President and highlighted Mizoram's journey from a strife-ridden state to becoming the most peaceful state in the country.

He emphasized the state's alignment with the nation's developmental trajectory despite facing challenges in the past.

The Vice President also presided over the convocation ceremony of Mizoram University (MZU), where a total of 7980 students were awarded degrees, further emphasizing the commitment to education and skill development in the region.
