Guwahati: Interruptions in train services and poor condition of the national highways has badly affected transportation of fuel and other essential commodities to the Northeastern hill state of Mizoram.

Trains have been cancelled since August 21 as the railway tracks at the Bhairabi-Sairang route were badly affected by floods and landslides.

Railway engineers and workers have been working tirelessly in the affected sites to restore railway services to Mizoram at the earliest.

On the other hand, the transporters have also ceased operations due to poor road conditions in a stretch of the National Highway-306 and National Highway-6 between Kawnpui and Khamrang in Kolasib district.

According to the truck drivers, the Kawnpui-Sairang stretch on NH-306 and NH-6 are in such a condition that transporting fuel through it is not feasible.

They said the poor condition of the road poses risk to the lives of the truck drivers and there may be spillage of oil from the oil tankers due to the bumpy condition of the road.

The truck drivers decided not to ply on this stretch for their safety as well as the safety of the local populace.

Majority of the fuel stations in state capital Aizawl and other towns of the state have run out of stock.

The Mizoram Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department have urged the public not to panic, assuring that the state government is taking all necessary steps to repair the damaged portion of the national highway.
