Mizoram foundation day is an annual celebration held on February 20 to commemorate the attainment of statehood by the Northeast state in 1987.

On this significant day, the Lushai Hills Autonomous District Council was elevated to the status of a full-fledged state, marking Mizoram as the 23rd state of India.

February 20 is also observed as the Statehood Day for both Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh.

Situated in Northeast region of India, Mizoram stands as the southernmost landlocked state in the area.

Its expansive territory is adorned with dense forests, covering more than three-fourths of its landmass, which whisper tales of valuable timber resources and unique biodiversity.

The Mizo people, belonging exclusively to scheduled tribes, proudly call this land their home, with Aizawl serving as their bustling capital city.

Mizoram foundation day 2024: History

The roots of history of Mizoram dates back to 1961, with the formation of the Mizo National Front (MNF) by local Mizo tribal leaders, aiming to advocate for political rights.

The primary objective of the MNF was to safeguard the rights of the Mizo people and enhance their representation in society.

In pursuit of this goal, the MNF initiated a vigorous insurgency against the Indian government in 1966.

This uprising, spanning two decades, ultimately culminated in a peace accord between the government of India and the MNF in 1986.

This landmark agreement paved the way for the establishment of Mizoram as a state of India on February 20, 1987.
