Aizawl: A 34-year-old woman was arrested in Aizawl, Mizoram on Sunday for allegedly killing a shopkeeper in the new market area.

Speaking to reporters at a press conference on Sunday evening, Home Minister K Sapdanga said that Irene Lallawmzuali, a resident of Aizawl's Ramthar North, who was the prime suspect in the murder of 52-year-old V Lalhmingthangi of Aizawl's Tuikual South locality, was arrested from her friend's residence at Zemabawk locality in the northeastern fringe of Aizawl following massive search launched by police on Sunday.

He said that the victim Lalhmingthangi was found dead inside her shop at Aizawl New Market area on Sunday morning.

Her family were worried when she did not return to her home on Saturday night, he said.

On being informed about the incident, the police team and forensic team rushed to the spot and launched an investigation, the home minister said.

After a spot verification and taking statements from locals, the police grouped into several teams and launched a manhunt for the prime accused Irene within the town, he said.

After an intense search by the police teams, the accused was arrested from her friend's residence at Zemabawk Dinthar locality in the northeastern fringe of the state capital on Sunday, Sapdanga said.

He said that incriminating evidence, including a machete, and some valuable items believed to be the belongings of the deceased were recovered from the accused, he said.

When questioned by the police, the accused Irene Lallawmzuali confessed to her crime, the home minister said.

He said that the accused was booked under sections 302 (murder), 201 ( causing disappearance of evidence of offence) and 380 (theft) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Sapdanga also said that further investigation into the case will be launched.
