Telugu film becomes the first project under Meghalaya’s Film Tourism Policy
Guwahati: Meghalaya has scripted a landmark achievement in its creative economy journey with the completion of the first full-length feature film under the Meghalaya Film Tourism Policy 2025.
The Telugu crime-comedy Baa Baa Black Sheep, directed by Guni Manchikanti and produced by Chitralayam Studios, wrapped its entire shoot in the State, capturing Meghalaya’s breathtaking landscapes, especially around Sohra, in every frame.
Completed in an impressive 25 days, the production employed nearly 2,000 local youth across departments, making it one of Meghalaya’s largest creative job-generating film projects and a strong showcase of the State’s emerging production capabilities.
Featuring a flamboyant gangster, misfit friends, eccentric criminals, and a frantic chase sparked by the discovery of Mahatma Gandhi’s long-lost watch, the film brings a high-energy narrative to Meghalaya’s growing filmography.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma hailed the achievement as a major recognition of Meghalaya’s film-ready ecosystem.
“Under the Meghalaya Film Policy, the team has completed the first movie. They shot this Telugu film in just 25 days, and they filmed 100% of it right here in Meghalaya, mostly in the Sohra area. You will be happy to know that the production employed close to 2,000 of our youths during the shoot. I am very happy, and I hope that many more such films will come and Meghalaya will become a very popular destination for this,” he said.
Producer Venu Donepudi also credited Meghalaya’s strong institutional support and local talent for enabling the film to finish well ahead of industry timelines.
“It has been a great experience; under your leadership and the beautiful people of Meghalaya, we were able to complete the film, a film of this scale, in less than 30 days, actually around 25 days, which is going to be a record in itself. This film is going to be released in Khasi as well, and we would like to invite you for the premiere in Hyderabad,” he said.
The film’s completion aligns perfectly with Meghalaya’s Vision 2032, which positions tourism and the creative sector among ten key drivers for economic transformation, aiming to scale the State’s economy to $10 billion by 2028 and $16 billion by 2032. With its cinematic landscapes, vibrant cultural identity, and skilled youth workforce, Meghalaya is fast becoming a compelling destination for filmmakers across India.
The Meghalaya Film Tourism Policy 2025 further strengthens this momentum by offering financial incentives, single-window clearances through the Invest Meghalaya Portal, and dedicated support for content production. Subsidies of up to Rs 1 crore or 25% of the production cost are available for the first ten films, alongside additional grants for projects involving local talent, music, or releasing on Hello Meghalaya, the State’s official OTT platform.
Backed by policy, talent, and terrain, Baa Baa Black Sheep now signals a new era, putting Meghalaya firmly on the national filmmaking map.
