Meghalaya to convert 1 lakh hectares to organic farming under new mission
Shillong: Agriculture Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh stated the Meghalaya has a new state mission aiming to convert over 100,000 hectares of land to organic cultivation by 2028.
The Meghalaya State Organic Mission 2024-2028 aims to achieve NPOP-certified organic cultivation across the designated land area.
Reports stated that six service providers have been appointed to facilitate certification and mission implementation.
A new society, MEGNOLIA, has been formed to promote organic and natural farming initiatives.
However, leader of opposition Ronnie V Lyngdoh highlighted the need for supporting farmers in transitioning to organic methods and ensuring fair market access for their produce.
Minister Lyngdoh acknowledged the challenges but stated that the government has its commitment to gradually increase organic farming coverage and support systems.
Former Chief Minister Mukul Sangma respondinh to the mission, cautioned against scheme duplication, while VPP leader Ardent M Basaiawmoit suggested establishing a comprehensive farmer data system.
