Shillong: The United Democratic Party (UDP) has called for a fresh strategy for implementing the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in Meghalaya, citing dissatisfaction with past efforts.

The UDP's leadership called for the importance of applying more political pressure and finding the right approach.

UDP general secretary Jemino Mawthoh referenced the unanimous resolution passed by the State Assembly for ILP implementation and the persistent advocacy by pressure groups, The Shillong Times reported.

Highlighting the prevalence of ILP in most Northeastern states and its recent adoption by the BJP-ruled Manipur, Mawthoh urged the Centre to heed the indigenous people's call for protection while ensuring fairness to genuine non-tribal settlers.

Mawthoh also stressed the necessity of devising effective mechanisms to mitigate the impact of influx stating the absence of such measures and the resultant unrest affecting all citizens.

Additionally, Mawthoh called for unity not only for ILP but also for language inclusion.
