Shillong: The All-Khasi Meghalaya Tourist Taxis Association (AKMTTA) has urged the Meghalaya government to establish a reciprocal transport agreement with Assam, ensuring mutual benefits for transporters in both states.

In a letter to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, the association proposed that the agreement include terms and conditions for a symmetric arrangement.

AKMTTA suggested the introduction of Meghalaya Motor Vehicle and Taxation Rules to streamline transportation regulations.

They also suggested a 24/7 Info Centers at Guwahati airport and railway station, and Shillong airport in Umroi, to provide tourists with essential information.

They further call for tourism and permit issuing authority check points at tourist site entry points to facilitate smooth travel.

The association highlighted the pressing livelihood concerns of tourist taxi owners and drivers in the Khasi Jaiñtia region, seeking support without banning vehicles from other states.

Instead, they proposed that commercial vehicles drop tourists at designated spots, while local cabbies take them to tourist sites.
