Meghalaya: Shillong Medical College set to open next year

Shillong: The Meghalaya government stated that it was optimistic about launching the Shillong Medical College (SMC) in 2025.

Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh said that the SMC has a better chance of qualifying as a medical institute ahead of Tura Medical College due to its advanced stage of completion.

However, the meet the requirements, the college needs to fulfill several norms.

The norms include a 400-bedded hospital and adequate space with adequate faculty recruitment.

Lyngdoh said that faculty recruitment is crucial for obtaining the necessary clearance.

She also informed that over 200 students from Meghalaya have applied for 64 medical seats at PA Sangma International Medical College, which is offering seats under the Meghalaya quota.

Students will need to pay Rs 4.95 lakh per year as tuition fees, totaling Rs 24.75 lakh for the MBBS course. The state government is considering providing additional financial assistance to these students.
